I think Blind Willie Johnson wrote that tune - not entirely sure - but his atleast was the inspiration of the dead's version and zep's version - though neither one of those are alike. If i am wrong - someone call me out on this - dont want to spread falsehoods.


i have a four disc set ( a copy though) of old old blues tunes - he is listed as performing and writing that song - dont have the actual liner notes though - so i may be way off base.

Hard to say sometimes - for instance Mississippi John Hurt claims to have written Stagger Lee and CC Rider and so does every blues man who ever played those tunes.

i dont know if he was the original though - like i said, no liner notes - dont want to spread false info. didnt see your post before i posted - so was certainly not trying to correct you.
